overview Tabia Henry Akintobi, PhD, MPH is a social behavioral scientist, Associate Professor of Community Health and Preventive Medicine and Associate Dean of Community Engagement at Morehouse School of Medicine. She received her Doctorate of Philosophy in Public Health from the University of South Florida. As Principal Investigator of a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention-funded Prevention Research Center (PRC) she demonstrates leadership in local, regional, national and global clinical and translational evaluation and research addressing social and public health disparities. She represents the Center in collaboration with institutional, local and national leaders seeking to facilitate effective translational research and evaluation between academicians and communities. She leads other multidisciplinary collaboratives designed to model effective engagement strategies including but not limited to the federally-funded Atlanta Clinical and Translational Institute Community Engagement and Research Program and The Exploratory Center of Excellence on Health Disparities and the Racial Ethnic Approaches to Community Health research infrastructure and implementation grants. Her public health leadership is also demonstrated through election to national taskforces designed to shape the science and practice of effective engagement. Among them include the National Institutes of Health National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences Collaboration and Engagement Domain Taskforce designed to advance team science towards becoming a major academic model, ensure that translational science is performed and facilitate shared community-academic leadership roles. She is also Chair of the National Centers for Disease Control and Prevention PRC Steering Committee designed to advance collective awareness, impact and adoption of best practices implemented through community-engaged research employed by 26 nationally-funded health PRCs. Germane to these efforts are her leadership in community-based participatory research pedagogy and leading experiential learning opportunities for trainees across the health professional career development pipeline. In her role as Director of Evaluation and Institutional Assessment, she provides vision and oversight in the development of research, service and training evaluation designs, data analysis, and synthesis for investigators seeking evaluation capacity building, services and associated grant support. She is the author of numerous peer-reviewed manuscripts, book chapters and primers documenting the processes, models and outcomes associated with multisector engagement designed to improve population health. She conducts these activities incorporating her expertise in the areas of community-engaged research, social marketing and participatory evaluation.
